If you’ve ever pictured Jesus as only gentle and soft-spoken, this moment might feel…surprising. Because this is the day He walks into the temple, the center of worship, and instead of quietly observing, He starts flipping tables.
Literally.
Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people selling animals for sacrifices. He knocked over the tables of the money changers...He said
to them, "The Scriptures declare, 'My Temple will be called a house of prayer," but you have turned it into a den of thieves!"- Matthew 21.12-13
At first glance, it can feel intense. Even uncomfortable. But when you look a little closer, it wasn’t random anger. It was a response to something deeper. The place that was meant to be about connection with God had slowly become crowded with noise, distraction, and people taking advantage of others. What was meant to be sacred had become… cluttered. And Jesus didn’t ignore it. He stepped in and cleared it out. Not to destroy - but to restore.
And honestly… whether you believe in Jesus or not, there’s something in this that feels familiar. Because we all have areas of our lives that get crowded. Busy. Noisy. Filled with things that weren’t meant to carry so much weight. And sometimes, deep down, we know something needs to shift… we just don’t always know how.
What I love about this moment is this: Jesus doesn’t walk away from the mess. He walks into it. And maybe, just maybe, this isn’t only a story about something that happened back then…maybe it’s an invitation to pause and ask: What in my life feels out of place right now? What feels heavier or more crowded than it should?
A Quiet Reflection
You don’t have to have all the answers.
Just take a moment today to notice:
Where do you feel overwhelmed, distracted, or out of alignment?
No fixing. No pressure.
Just be aware of it.
A Simple Prayer (if you’re unsure what you believe)
God,
If You’re real… and if You see me…help me notice what I’ve been too busy to see.
If You’re real… and if You see me…help me notice what I’ve been too busy to see.
Show me anything in my life that’s taking up space it shouldn’t. And if change needs to happen,
give me the courage to take one small step. I want to know if you are real.
Amen.
A Simple Prayer (if you know Him)
Jesus,
Thank You that You love me enough not to leave me where I am. Search my heart and gently show
Thank You that You love me enough not to leave me where I am. Search my heart and gently show
me anything that doesn’t belong-anything that’s crowding out time with You or pulling me away from Your peace.
Give me the courage to release what You’re asking me to let go of, and help me trust that what You’re making r
oom for is better. Make my heart a place where You are fully welcome.
Amen.
